The YESS Institute on National Public Radio

Over the holidays, Colorado public radio featured co-founder Carlo Kriekels in their series on stories of hope and gratitude. You can hear it online. Go to www.kcfr.org and click on stories of hope and gratitude and you’ll see a picture and button to hear the 4 minute segment.

It’s about how an adventurous motorbike trip from California to Chile in 1992 changed his life path from becoming an European attorney to starting the YESS Institute in the US ten years later.

What is the YESS Institute

The YESS (Youth Empowerment Support Services) Institute is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit located in Denver, Colorado, that provides youth, role models and assisting organizations EmoSmart™ - emotional intelligence - leadership education through experiential instruction and peer mentoring.

The YESS Institute's approach to education and youth leadership

By adopting the following innovative, developmental approach to learning, the YESS Institute has successfully enhanced relationship skills, self-confidence and academic success of hundreds of Metro Denver youth since 2001:

Peer Mentoring
The most influential individuals in the lives of adolescents are their peers. Therefore, the YESS Institute uses peer-to-peer mentoring and peer education to promote ethical, positive behavior to at-risk youth through its Youth Mentor Leadership Program.

Emotional Intelligence Leadership Education
Emotional Intelligence author Daniel Goleman, states that 80% of success in life comes from the ability to perceive and manage one’s and others’ emotions. The YESS Institute has adopted these principles into its youth programs covering four key adolescent developmental quadrants:
Self-Awareness - Self-Management - Interpersonal Management - Community Awareness

The YESS Institute's approach to capacity building

The YESS Institute has built the capacity of numerous youth agencies by training staff and volunteers in the YESS EmoSmart™ curriculum.
To positively affect the kids, we believe that the EmoSmart™ skills must be instilled at all levels of the agency through:
Coaching for Executive Directors
Staff Leadership Training
Volunteer / Mentor Training
