The YESS Mentoring Program at Kepner Middle School

This program is a part of the City's Metro Mentor Challenge within the Youth Mentoring Collaborative. YESS Institute is serving nearly 40 primarily minority middle school students who are all living in poverty. Through YESS collaborations with Community College of Denver, University of Colorado at Denver, Metropolitan University, University of Denver, we have been very successful in recruiting college-age students to be mentors for the middle school students. Furthermore, one third of our mentors are minority first-generation college attenders. With a similar background as the kid they are mentoring they are the ideal role models who are demonstrating in their own life that the Kepner students do not have to drop-out; that they have another option instead of joining gangs. They can stay in school, go to college in become a productive educated member of this community.

What Kepner youth and mentors have to say:
“I hope to teach others to not be in gangs.”

“I hope to teach others that whatever they put their mind to they can achieve.”

“I hope to have a better future.”

“I look forward to the chase.  The goals I make now, and the roads in which I take to reach those goals.”

"I hope t o live my life to the fullest and have no regrets."

“Follow Your Dreams and Don’t Give Up!”.

“Those who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the people who just might be crazy enough to do it!”
